Winter break boredom got the best of you?

As the New Year settles in, remember to make Terp Thon a part of your New Year’s resolution! While you may be at home, or in the College Park area, don’t let Terp Thon slip your mind. Now is the perfect time to raise your minimum or surpass that total if you’ve already reached it.  If you are at home try to reach out to your friends and family.  Explain the cause and what it means to you.  One easy way to get donations is to have your parents or any other family members forward the link to your fundraising page to their own friends.  If allowed, you can even write a blurb about Terp Thon and what it means to you and have your parents leave a donation jar at their job or at your own job.  Another even easier way to fundraise is to make the link your Facebook status one day.  You’d be surprised at the donations you’ll receive from friends and family.  Canning is another great way to fundraise.  Organize a canning trip in your hometown, DC or the College Park area.  Canning is a simple and fun way to raise your minimum and beyond.  Remember to keep in contact with your team members throughout break too! Currently, we are offering 6 courtside tickets, 3 sets with 2 courtside seats each, for the Maryland v. Duke home basketball game on January 25th.  To win these seats, you must get half of your team’s members to raise their minimum by January 20th, 50 days before the event! Of the teams that accomplish this, three will be chosen at random and members who have raised their minimum will be entered in the final drawing.  Throughout your fundraising efforts remember the real motivation for your hard work, the kids.  Though it may seem hard to fundraise, it is nothing in comparison to what our miracle children endured.  Keep in mind that every dollar you raise goes directly to helping these children live the lives they deserve.  FTK!

Meeting Jaiwen!

Terp Thon & Friends got to meet Jaiwen at the end of the semester. He is the newest miracle child addition to the Terp Thon family. He was diagnosed with bone cancer when he was twelve and has a part-prosthetic femur bone, with a 10 inch scar as proof. He had to learn how to walk all over again. He and his family came to talk at College Park to tell Jaiwen’s story. His mother was brought to tears. Jaiwen was one of the lucky ones—he survived. He has friends who are still in the hospital and don’t get to walk into school every day. Jaiwen was blessed with amazing friends along the process. Five of his best friends were able to raise $26,000 for his treatment. That was five 12 year olds. If these kids can raise $26,000, imagine was the entire Maryland community can do? Jaiwen’s maturity was outstanding, and he has a more worldly perspective than most of us ever will. His story reminded us to be thankful for all we have over this holiday season, because not all children will be home celebrating the holidays with their families. And as Maryland students, we were reminded that in reality, finals aren’t that bad compared to what so many have to go through. In this holiday season, let’s be thankful for our friends, family, health, and having the Maryland community to support us every day.

Dr. Bear

As we all know, Dr. Bear is the lovable and adorable mascot for Children’s National Medical Center.  He inspires joy and smiles to everyone he interacts with and is a symbol of hope for many families and their children.  More importantly, Dr. Bear is there for the kids to boost their morale and give them some energy.  Studies have shown that happiness, smiles and laughter contribute to health and overall well-being.  How could you resist one of these comforting bear hugs?

Dr. Bear recently made an appearance to give two of our miracle kids, Tess and Alex, the trip of their lives.  They are the hospital’s Champion Kids and were each awarded a trip for a weekend to Disney World.  The kids were ecstatic when they heard this information, but were even more excited to see Dr. Bear.  You can witness this yourself in the following video…

And now… a reason to be a Terp Thon Dancer…

Did you know that the average college guy can burn 6,804 calories and the average girl can burn 5, 054 calories while dancing for 12 hours?  Well its true and it just so happens that TERP THON is 12 hours long so it is actually the best event ever.  Let’s put it in perspective:

You walk into the event and get a free t-shirt.

You meet up with all your friends, fellow club members, sisters or brothers from Greek life.

You all are dancing and talking and having an awesome time.  You get to hear from amazing kids who have survived illnesses thanks to Children’s’ National Hospital.

The kids might even perform and sing something like Hannah Montana that of course gets you pumped up.

You take a few breaks (WITHOUT SITTING) to enjoy some free food.

This is all happening while you are burning thousands of calories! And let’s be real, based on the typical college diet, you feel good that you are exercising.

THE BEST PART- ALL this is happening while you are raising money for kids who aren’t lucky enough to be standing because they are in a hospital trying to get better.

It’s a no brainer.

Why not get that body in shape while participating in the best philanthropy Maryland has to offer?

Kick-Off Event!

A big thank you to everyone who came out last Friday to help kick start our registration!!

We had 119 dancers sign up just on Friday!! And after only our first weekend open, our registration total hit 300 dancers!

At the carnival students were able to buy tickets for only a quarter each. The tickets were then spent on various games, prizes, and food. The proceeds all benefit Children’s National Hospital.

The weather was perfect, we had some amazing dancers sign up, two of our miracle kids were there, and we began raising some money!! Overall, we would call that a success!!

If you haven’t signed up yet, don’t worry. You still have time to register:

A miracle maker.

In love with Children’s National Medical Center.

A way of living,

An obsession.

A place for laughter, tears, friends, and family.

The best 2nd and 3rd year dance marathon program…

…After only its 2nd year!

The best thing UMD has to offer,

One of the largest student organizations on campus.

Going to be the best dance marathon program, ever.

The most inspirational night of your life.

Magical.

A time to meet the kids you directly help,

And the place to fall in love with these kids even more.

Where you will stand for those who can’t,

And where you will stand as a nurse does on a 12 hour shift.
