We went around UMD asking students why they participate in Terp Thon. These were the answers we received.

Terp Thon & Friends got to meet Jaiwen at the end of the semester. He is the newest miracle child addition to the Terp Thon family. He was diagnosed with bone cancer when he was twelve and has a part-prosthetic femur bone, with a 10 inch scar as proof. He had to learn how to walk all over again. He and his family came to talk at College Park to tell Jaiwen’s story. His mother was brought to tears. Jaiwen was one of the lucky ones—he survived. He has friends who are still in the hospital and don’t get to walk into school every day. Jaiwen was blessed with amazing friends along the process. Five of his best friends were able to raise $26,000 for his treatment. That was five 12 year olds. If these kids can raise $26,000, imagine was the entire Maryland community can do? Jaiwen’s maturity was outstanding, and he has a more worldly perspective than most of us ever will. His story reminded us to be thankful for all we have over this holiday season, because not all children will be home celebrating the holidays with their families. And as Maryland students, we were reminded that in reality, finals aren’t that bad compared to what so many have to go through. In this holiday season, let’s be thankful for our friends, family, health, and having the Maryland community to support us every day.

Did you know that the average college guy can burn 6,804 calories and the average girl can burn 5, 054 calories while dancing for 12 hours? Well its true and it just so happens that TERP THON is 12 hours long so it is actually the best event ever. Let’s put it in perspective:
You walk into the event and get a free t-shirt.
You meet up with all your friends, fellow club members, sisters or brothers from Greek life.
You all are dancing and talking and having an awesome time. You get to hear from amazing kids who have survived illnesses thanks to Children’s’ National Hospital.
The kids might even perform and sing something like Hannah Montana that of course gets you pumped up.
You take a few breaks (WITHOUT SITTING) to enjoy some free food.
This is all happening while you are burning thousands of calories! And let’s be real, based on the typical college diet, you feel good that you are exercising.
THE BEST PART- ALL this is happening while you are raising money for kids who aren’t lucky enough to be standing because they are in a hospital trying to get better.
It’s a no brainer.
Why not get that body in shape while participating in the best philanthropy Maryland has to offer?
