We went around UMD asking students why they participate in Terp Thon. These were the answers we received.

Did you know that the average college guy can burn 6,804 calories and the average girl can burn 5, 054 calories while dancing for 12 hours? Well its true and it just so happens that TERP THON is 12 hours long so it is actually the best event ever. Let’s put it in perspective:
You walk into the event and get a free t-shirt.
You meet up with all your friends, fellow club members, sisters or brothers from Greek life.
You all are dancing and talking and having an awesome time. You get to hear from amazing kids who have survived illnesses thanks to Children’s’ National Hospital.
The kids might even perform and sing something like Hannah Montana that of course gets you pumped up.
You take a few breaks (WITHOUT SITTING) to enjoy some free food.
This is all happening while you are burning thousands of calories! And let’s be real, based on the typical college diet, you feel good that you are exercising.
THE BEST PART- ALL this is happening while you are raising money for kids who aren’t lucky enough to be standing because they are in a hospital trying to get better.
It’s a no brainer.
Why not get that body in shape while participating in the best philanthropy Maryland has to offer?

A big thank you to everyone who came out last Friday to help kick start our registration!!
We had 119 dancers sign up just on Friday!! And after only our first weekend open, our registration total hit 300 dancers!
At the carnival students were able to buy tickets for only a quarter each. The tickets were then spent on various games, prizes, and food. The proceeds all benefit Children’s National Hospital.
The weather was perfect, we had some amazing dancers sign up, two of our miracle kids were there, and we began raising some money!! Overall, we would call that a success!!
If you haven’t signed up yet, don’t worry. You still have time to register:

Name: Abby D. (second on the right)
Year: Rising Sophomore
Role in terpthon: Advertising Captain, Apparel and Gear
Describe yourself in 5 words or less: Living life and loving it.
Why did you get involved in Terp Thon? “I got involved in Terp Thon because a friend brought it up at our class council meeting, and the entire council fell in love with the idea. We set up a 2014 class council team and began fund raising.”
What was your favorite part of the event? “It’s so hard to pick my favorite part of Terp Thon. I loved the last hour, and not because I would be able to sit soon. In that last hour, the gym was raging (literally) with excitement. It was the best dance party I’ve ever been to and the energy was just insane. Everyone forgot about their tired legs and just had the time of their lives. What made it better was that we were dancing for the amazing kids from Children’s National who even spent the afternoon at Terp Thon.”
What made you decide to become a member of Terp Thon? “The second the clock hit hour 12 and we got to sit, I knew I HAD to be a part of Terp Thon. I have honestly never felt so accomplished in my life as I did when I realized I had danced for 12 hours. The Terp Thon community really made sure that we knew as dancers that we were making miracles happen. I just knew I needed to be involved because just thinking about the whole night gave me goose-bumps (and they were the good kind!)”
Why should people become dancers? “I think everyone at UMD should become a dancer for Terp Thon. Join with your friends or with a club you are in. It’s the perfect way to build stronger relationships because everyone at Terp Thon is there for one cause, and that is for the kids. Terp Thon was full of laughter, tears, friends, and family; and I promise, when you finish your 12th hour, you will walk out with a smile and feel more amazing then you’ve ever felt in your life. FTK!”
